This is probably not going to surprise anyone– This is simply an excellent DVD, in every scale. The first disc contains the movie itself, which is transferred from its original, digital source. The picture quality is unbelievable. Not one spot comes up during the movie, not one scratch appears– because this wasn’t transferred from film. This is the way A Bug’s Life should be watched. The colors are amazing, bright and contrast eachother perfectly. The sound is also unbelievable– this movie challanged my 1.5 surround system perfectly. Unlike some other movies I’ve seen, where the two rear speakers are only used about twice in the movie, A Bug’s Life uses them almost constantly– You can hear the crickets and cicadas all around you in many of the scenes, Hopper’s gang are flying at you from behind; Even with a simple scene like the “Royal Huddle” the ant’s footsteps are coming from around you. The first disc contains a Cinemascope widescreen version and a pan-and-scan version. I’ll have to say that if you don’t have a widescreen TV (I don’t), you probably should forget about the widescreen version here as it is aspecially small. Besides, the PSP version was edited digitally in a very special way, even described on this DVD– you hardly miss anything in the PSP version because of that special editing. If anything, you actually get to see more detail. Also on the first disc are two special audio choices, Music Only (cool) and SFX only (VERY cool), and a director’s commentary (quite cool, although not the best I’ve heard. John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich seem to talk too much about the story, which sometimes makes it sound as if they’re just describing what you already see on screen.)

(I’m not going to give review to the movie itself here– In short, it is definitly a 5 star movie!)

The second disk is where the real fun begins. I’ve never seen so many extras, with so many choices to choose from. It’s almost confusing– You not only get to see how they made the movie, you get to literally see how they developed EACH AND EVERY character in this film. It’s astonishing. You can also hear how they edited the sound, see how they made the PSP version so good, see how they made the outtakes at the end (and also see the outtakes by themselves, clean, full screen and with no credits to interrupt), see an interview with the characters themselves (which is simply hilarious), and… See Geri’s Game in all its glory. And there’s even more.

Basically, if you don’t have this DVD, you WILL buy it. Otherwise, what’s the point of having a DVD?

A BUG’S LIFE is truly a movie that the entire family can enjoy. It is adorable, funny, and it has a message that everybody can relate to.

The DVD is amazing, amazing, amazing! The transfer (the first ever completely digital transfer), is simply unbelievable. It is like you can reach into the screen and touch the characters. The cinemascope animation is truly stunning, and the transfer expresses it beautifully. The sound is wonderful. You feel like you’re in the bugs’ world.

This DVD has the most amazing set of extras I have ever seen. It takes you through the entire process of making A BUG’S LIFE…I’ve gone through “preproduction” and the first half of “production” and it took me an hour and a half…I still have three sections left! What is more amazing is that every extra is interesting! Truly an outstanding, sure to be groundbreaking disc. Disney, why can’t all of your DVDs be like this!

From the opening scenes of this film–majestic shots of a car traveling the rural midwest on a crisp autumn morning–HOOSIERS serves notice to the viewer that he or she is in for a wonderful movie experience. Set in a tiny Indiana town half a century ago, HOOSIERS captures the look and feel of rural Americana, of a hardworking people with a single commonality: their love for basketball. The pure innocence of this film, innocence long lost over the subsequent decades, is magical.

Gene Hackman portrays Coach Norman Dale, an outsider who comes to basketball-crazy Hickory, Indiana, to coach the high school team. Haunted by mistakes made in his past, Dale is eager for the second chance he has been given. Immediately, his no-nonsense, stress-the-fundamentals coaching philosophy puts him at odds with the town, yet Dale refuses to compromise his principles. He survives–barely–a petition for his ouster, and the rest of the movie warmly portrays the town of Hickory and its high school basketball team coming together, a team that makes a magical run through the Indiana State Tournament.

Barbara Hershey as Myra Fleener, Hickory’s assistant principal, and Sheb Wooley as superintendent/principal Cletus–the man who hires Dale–are solid. Yet Dennis Hopper gives the best performance as Wilbur “Shooter” Flatch. Shooter, a former great player himself and father of one of the boys on Coach Dale’s team, is the town drunk; despite his alcoholism, his knowledge of the game is immense, and Dale enlists his aid. The reformation of this character–the feeling and depth that Hopper gives this role–is exceptional.

Director David Anspaugh gives us a sensational “feel good” movie, augmented by Jerry Goldsmith’s powerful musical score. HOOSIERS tells a beautiful story, so magical in its depiction you’ll be cheering from your chair. Highly recommended.

It is purely coincidental that the backdrop for this movie happens to be high school basketball or sports of any kind: This is a genuinely great movie, leaving the audience feeling good about themselves and willing to search for a second chance at success in life, no matter how great the failure. A one-word description of the movie? REDEMPTION. This theme runs throughout, i.e., a second chance…for the town drunk, for the coach, for the wannabe assistant coach, for the old-maid school teacher, for the team, for Jimmy Chitwood, for the drunk’s son, for Strap, for the town, for the principal, for the players who quit, for the equipment manager, for the school bus…with the movie on video, you now have a second chance to watch and enjoy this great movie! It is worth the redemption price! If you already have seen it, after reading this review you may see it through a different perspective; if you have not seen it, I know you will thoroughly enjoy it, over and over again. Hoosiers is not just my favorite sports movie, it is my favorite movie of all time. The movie truly is about redemption, about people failing and being given a second chance. Some handle it better than others, but it cuts a true slice out of life in the 1950s and the 2000s! We should all get that kind of second chance! The best part is, we do. Those who succeeded in Hoosiers accepted their second chance and made something of it. I watch this movie any time that life hands me a setback or any time that I fail or fall. It is a better pick-me-up than any anti-depressant. So, wipe your slate clean and watch Hoosiers again for the first time!

John Waters expands the definition of female trouble in this mutant tribute to good-girl-gone-bad drive-in melodramas. The only real problem with Stir of Echoes has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with unlucky coincidence. Adapted from a Richard Matheson novel, this film arrived around the same time as The Sixth Sense, and surface similarities made it suffer by cursory comparison and the competing film’s phenomenal success. It’s a pity, because this one features one of Kevin Bacon’s best performances, in a psychological thriller that makes a lot more right moves than wrong ones. Bacon plays a blu-collar guy who laments his ordinary life, only to learn, when his sister-in-law (Ileanna Douglas) hypnotizes him, that he is a “receiver” capable of seeing spirits and split-second glimpses of past and future events. It’s a torturous gift to have–especially since his friendly Chicago neighborhood possesses a dark secret–and Bacon plays the role with an appropriate mixture of obsession and internalized torment.

Similarity to The Sixth Sense applies only to the basic premise and the character of Bacon’s young son. Otherwise, this is more of a hard-edged journey of self-discovery, marital crisis, and recovery, with Bacon’s wife (played by the highly underrated Kathryn Erbe) involved in an underdeveloped subplot about a group of people who share Bacon’s gift as paranormal “receivers.” Furthering his career as a writer-director of intelligent thrillers, David Koepp makes a few missteps in pacing and thematic overkill, but overall Stir of Echoes is a sharp, sensitive thriller that unfolds to reveal a dramatically satisfying solution to its mystery. –Jeff Shannon
